The DCS Tabs
I still see DCS’s built-in kneeboard
OpenKneeboard does not modify or replace DCS’s kneeboard; it provides an additional one. If you do not see OpenKneeboard, see the answer below. If you do not want to see DCS’s built-in kneeboard, use a different key combination to show/hide it.
I don’t see OpenKneeboard
See troubleshooting pages for:
None of the tabs ever show anything
- Check if the Theater tab loads for Caucasus or NTTR; if so, check a different section.
- Check that DCS is in OpenKneeboard’s Games list inside settings, and that the Saved Games path is correct
The theater tabs only loads for NTTR and Caucasus
DCS World does not include kneeboard images for other maps; OpenKneeboard does not currently generate charts.
Some built-in aircraft kneeboard pages are not loaded
Dynamic (Lua) kneeboard pages are not supported at all, and are unlikely to be supported in the future. This includes most of the kneeboard pages for the F14, F16, and F18.
Files I added to the DCS kneeboard aren’t being shown
Make sure you put them in a place where the specific tab is looking. OpenKneeboard only loads files that are specific to an aircraft, terrain or mission; if you want some files to always be loaded, add a file or folder tab as described in the ‘Quick Start’ guide.
You can see the full paths that OpenKneeboard is looking for files in Settings -> Tabs, with a tick or cross next to them showing whether or not the folder exists. A cross doesn’t mean “something is wrong”, just “OpenKneeboard looked here, and there wasn’t anything”.
If the path is incorrect for some aircraft
For some modules, DCS has multiple internal names for the same module, which can lead to OpenKneeboard being unable to find the correct files - especially on newer aircraft. For example, older versions of OpenKneeboard would look for a kneeboard folder called F-16C_50, while DCS would look for F-16C”.
If you encounter a problem like this where just the aircraft folder name is incorrect (e.g. F-16C_50 instead of F-16C):
- Check if this has already been reported
- If not, please report the issue so it can be fixed in a future version of OpenKneeboard; include the incorrect path, corrected path, and the module name
- If you are comfortable editing JSON:
- Open
%PROGRAMFILES%\OpenKneeboard\sharein Windows explorer - Open the
Saved Games\OpenKneeboardfolder too - Copy
DCS-Aircraft-Mapping.jsonfrom thesharefolder to OpenKneeboard’s Saved Games folder - Edit
Saved Games\OpenKneeboard\DCS-Aircraft-Mapping.jsonto include the correction - If it works, attach your modified
DCS-Aircraft-Mapping.jsonto your GitHub issue
